Issue Position: Openness in Government

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

From the most basic South Dakota township all the way through the school board, county commission, legislature, and finally state government, including the governor--where the people's money is involved, government must be wide open to public scrutiny. There is seldom any good reason for "executive sessions" that exclude the press and public from meetings. Many boards ignore state laws that say that there must be a motion made after coming out of "executive session" that pertains to discussions made there.
I believe the open meetings laws of SD should be enforced.

Elected officials need to be accessible to their constituents. In this age of e-mail and telephone, I hope to keep in touch. I promise to listen to your concerns and positions on the issues under consideration in the SD Legislature.
